Managing director at Polaris Shipmanagement

I like to work with numbers, perhaps because that is what I am good at. From primary school right through university, I was always a top 5 achiever in all maths and accountancy exams. What fascinates me about shipping is that it is an industry where I will never stop learning. From the large sums involved in the deals to the number of responsibilities required to keep a vessel in operation, every aspect just makes this industry exciting.

Work keeps me sane and gives me a great sense of achievement. Career is important to me, especially as a working mother. I would like one day to be the professional my little son can look up to. What I expect from my job is the chance to learn and grow with the firm as I advance in my profession. This means to be encouraged to broaden my capabilities and to build my experience every step of the way, while at the same time being provided with an environment of opportunity in which hard work and achievement are rewarded. Therefore I appreciate the training opportunities that are given to me, such as the recent Business Objects Financial Consolidation (BOFC) training, or group-wide meetings such as the annual CFO Conference, where I can exchange information with colleagues and top management from international subsidiaries. I am lucky to have a job that I really enjoy and that allows me to work with my strengths to further develop what I am good at. To top that, I also get to work with a group of people who all genuinely like and respect each other.

One special occasion I like to look back on is the FAST Close Project. With the effort of everyone in the firm, we managed to achieve the financial reporting target for the Rickmers Group on time. What I have learnt from this experience is that a clear vision, combined with effective leadership and teamwork, makes the impossible possible.
